Kitty Sanchez takes on the Flickr 365
As 2008 came to an end, I decided I needed a project for the new year. I decided it should be something that would encourage me to challenge myself and explore more with my photography. I discovered the phenomenon of the Flickr 365.
The concept is simple. 1 self portrait a day for a year. 365 self portraits in one calendar year. An excercise in vanity? Inevitably! But it was also an ideal excuse to create daily mini-photography-challenges. By the first week you’re out of ideas, so you start studying other portraits trying to figure out technique. You learn an approach or a trick you’d never heard of. These daily photos aren’t really useful outside the project- they’re rarely polished enough to be print worthy. They become a kind of digital-photo-sketchbook. Jottings, pieces of ideas, gestures towards something.
But the funny thing is, the ideas you learn in your “silly photography” can be applied to your professional. And they are. And they improve. Not just technique, but artistic approach.
